Black Adoptee Voices

Hear from adopted adults about their adoption journey including the role their first/birth parents/families have had in their lives and understanding of their own identity. Too often in the adoption field, the adoptee perspective is subordinated to that of the adoptive parent. Pact believes that adults with first-hand experience are the truest experts on that experience. The voices of Black adopted adults, born both domestically and internationally, will be featured. They will talk about their adoption experience, racial identity journey, harmful and positive narratives/stereotypes about Black culture, the importance of racial mirrors, and more.

Educational objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Apply first-hand knowledge from Black adult adoptees about their adoption and racial identity journey.
  2. For families formed by transracial adoption, list tangible steps adoptive parents can incorporate to support their Black child.
  1. Describe some of the common experiences of Black adoptees as they navigate their experiences around both race and adoption.
  2. Prepare themselves to answer common questions and concerns that are likely to come up for the Black adopted youth in their family and/or community.
  3. Give examples of privilege and how it applies in the context of the adoption of Black children.
  4. Identify stereotypes, cultural appropriation and microaggressions as applied to Black adoptees.
  5. Create an action plan for supporting Black adoptees.
