Pact Family Camp West
Pact Family Camp West, July 2-7, 2019, is an annual, five-day event that brings together families with adopted children of color from across the country to share experiences, learn from experts, and build community. All the camp counselors and most of the featured speakers are people of color, and most have a personal connection to adoption. In recent years Pact Family Camp has expanded welcoming both birth/first parents and adult adoptees of color, which has greatly enriched the experience for all participants.
Pact Camp West is held at the charming and well-appointed Granlibakken Resort. Nestled among the trees near Lake Tahoe, CA, Pact Family Camp West offers children, teens, and adults not only transformative learning experiences within “brave spaces,” but the chance to relax together in a beautiful setting, have fun, and build friendships with other families who know where they’re coming from.
You will stay in a comfortable, hotel-style room, with daily room service, and be provided with three generous meals a day. The site, within walking distance of beautiful Lake Tahoe, offers individual hotel-style rooms for families along with upgrade options such as rooms with kitchens as well as townhouses and multi-room suites. Amenities include a heated swimming pool and hot tub, a small fitness room, and even a spa where you can book an appointment for a massage. The resort is surrounded by walking trails; while many campers remain on the resort grounds the entire time, a pleasant hike brings you to Lake Tahoe, the Truckee River, and Tahoe City, as does a five-minute drive.
We expect approximately 100 families, including extended family members as well as birth/first family members and adopted adults and foster care alums.
The entire Pact staff will be on site to make sure camp goes smoothly, including Pact Executive Director Beth Hall. Deana Matthews will be back for her 9th year as Camp Director, and over 50% of the counselors will be returning as well. You can count on this highly experienced team to deliver a well-organized and thoughtfully-developed program!
New Camp FamiliesSo many first-time campers have told us that coming to Pact Family Camp is a life-changing experience! We are committed to making sure that new families have this experience every year. We hold 30 of available spaces for first-time campers who receive a $250 discount on registration fees.
Adoptive Parents of Color at Pact Family CampMuch of Pact’s year-round work focuses on adoptive parents of color and their children because in the world of adoption they remain an underserved constituency. We are very intentional in our efforts to make sure that Pact Family Camp, like all the work Pact does, serves the needs of parents of color and their children. We hold 35 spaces for families headed by adoptive parent(s) of color and families receive a $250 discount on registration fees. Click here to learn more.
ScholarshipsWe strive to make Pact Family Camp as accessible as possible to all families. Approximately 40% of the families at Pact Family Camp receive subsidies from our scholarship fund, paid for by donations and grants. In 2018, low-income families paid as little as $100 per family member to attend. Awards are determined by reviewing each family’s resources. Priority is given to those who apply by December 1st . To apply, complete and return the scholarship application.
Pact Family Camp West is in high demand. Although we would love to have every family who wants to register come to camp, we do have a limit of @100 families at our current site. All families begin by registering with a deposit that places them into the lottery; the deposit is fully refundable if you are not offered an opportunity to attend and will be rolled into your Camp Fees if you do attend. For deadlines and details see more information here.
“Having the opportunity to share the joys of being adoptive parents in an environment that was equal parts challenging and supportive made us feel connected and also pushed our thinking in some profound ways. But the highlight for me was seeing both of my children develop deep bonds with their counselors, who were also adoptees of color and just amazing role models.”

"Pact Camp is the one place each year where all of the aspects that make up our family are welcomed and accepted. We don’t need to put any parts of us away. We are actually asked to bring all the parts of us forward for full expression. This is true for our kids as well as for us as adults….Honestly, this is where I will be most understood, most supported, and most challenged to see as many aspects of a situation as I can so I can go back and parent as consciously and bravely and tenderly as I can. We have travelled across the country for 6 years to go to Pact Camp because there is nowhere else we can get this comprehensive an experience for our family that holds so many identities."
